285's on stock rims is legal if the tyre manufacturer says so. Some makes say yes, some say they are too narrow. 35's however are not legal on stock rims as 33's are the biggest you can go in most states. Besides, with rhe added width of most 35's (talking 305 minimum) you would need wheel spacers to fit them on stock rims, not legal either.

Sent from a tiny keyboard with fat fingers, apologies for my spelling. .

Seacomms I thought 33's and 35's were the same width i.e. 12.5 inches? This would make either no good for stock rims, or are you purely talking diameter?

Depends on the 33's. 285/70 17's are only 11.25 in wide and many manufacturers are ok for these on the 7.5" rims. They are also the largest diameter legally allowed on the JK (most) in most states.

Ah right, when you wrote 33's I took it literately, 285/70 17 are not 33's btw. they are metric size which is close to 33's but narrower as you have posted.
AFAIK LT305/65R17 is the closest metric size to 33's in any case, in the KM2 they are 32.8 inches diameter by 12.2 inches wide.

33" or 35" relates to outer diameter of the tyre.
What often gets misinterpreted is stating the width as representing the diameter ie 285s as being 33s.
33s can come in metric widths from 255mm to 315mm or possibly greater. Imperial 10" to 12.5".
