We all said the same thing in NSW but for a little inconvenience once a year it really made a difference to the quality of cars on the road.

I don't disagree with you, but you ain't just whistling Dixie when you talk about an inconvenience.
It's a two hour endurance here just to make an enquiry.
Who knows how long it would take to do an annual inspection, or is it carried out by an independent body?

A mechanic who is approved to do roadworthy inspections do it in NSW. It's usually done "on the spot" without an appointment. Usually only takes 10 minutes.

As Rustynuts said just about every mechanic, tyre place, servo etc in NSW are able to conduct an inspection. Most do it without an appointment and it takes 10 -15 minutes.

The only thing I don't like about it is that if you get knocked back for whatever reason you need to have it fixed and take it back to the mechanic that knocked you back. You can't take it anywhere else for a second opinion. This leaves it open for some unscrupulous mechanics to pick up things that don't need repairs so they can get work out of you.

That's why if I'm ever refused for some reason, I'll will purposely give the job to a different mechanic then return for approval.

Good point there Nanook. It is probably like that now being your inspection is now logged online. In the good old days before computers, I would shop around for a mech to pass my old s boxes and simply hide what one mech found.
