If it is squeaky belt then drop into your local auto parts store and get a can of CRC Anti-squeal for drive belts it will do the trick. But if the belt is howling because one of the guide rollers has a bad bearing you will need a mechanic to swap it out.

What year is it? The early auto tensioners have a definite life.

Just one outside the box ! XJ distributor shaft bushes tend to dry out and squeal like a canary.Take off gear on end of the shaft grease and assemble.

spray straight water from a squeeze bottle straight at the idler pulleys,
then the belt, to isolate the problem.

any half-assed mechanic should be able to sort it out with a new CORRECT size belt $35 (there are a few different size depends on year), and or idler pulleys $70.

If that doesnt fix it, any decent mechanic should be able to say, well I think it is the power steering or A/C, water pump etc etc

you can run (but not drive) the engine with no belt to see if that gets rid of the squeel, there is a belt diagram on the radiator cross panel

search this forum or youtube for more details.

my mate is a very friendly and honest mechanic, who works at Gateshead, about 20min north of you, not a Jeep expert though.

another mate is an expert mechanic, well familiar with Jeeps, he is at Rutherford

You could ring Budgewoi Wreckers and get a recomendation

PM me if need be

in addition to all the above suggestions, i also had a similar experience, in my case one of the pulleys belt running surface was worn and was NOT parallel with the mounting shaft, hard to describe, but it caused the belt to want to run off, then the next pulley would pull it back with the associated squeal/chirp.

drove me nuts
