I'm not a big fan of tunes, if you are going to use the power increase all the time, eg pulling a huge van in bloody high temperatures.

IMO they do take the engine closer to its theoretical maximum output, across most of the rev range, this might be o.k over short time frames.
But unless you have an exhaust gas temp gauge, you have no idea what temperatures are happening, when fully loaded in 40deg ambient conditions.

I do believe in "normal" conditions the tune will be fine and the added bonus of the swirl motor and egr delete, is great, but IMO be careful if you are going to work the engine hard in hot weather.

I have had a fair bit of experience commissioning HS and MS diesels, and EGT's are paramount, to engine longevity.
Metal can only take so much temp, before it turns to liquid, unburnt diesel causes horrible outcomes.

If you are concerned with a remap, and tow with the car or do heavy off road work, I would suggest putting in an exhaust temp probe.
Either just before the turbo or just after.

Good advice, and if buying a tune all the more reason to go Murchison. I would expect that from what I have read it is more designed for our environment, so EGT should not climb out of the range the engine can stand.

This is a good point, but i don't think you have to worry about exhaust temps with these motors, i have a tune and had a full exhaust went like cut cat but had nothing but problems with exhaust temps being to low.

ended up going back to standard cats and high flow dpf, exhaust temps back up to normal now, a few months ago my brother picked up a 4wd from mount gambier to melbourne sitting on 100 with 3.5 ton, going up hill water temp only went up 7* (97*), trans temp went up 4* (78*) and exhaust went up max 50* (380*) not bad considering they need 650* to do a burn.

Default GDE flash tune

My Results from a trip to Mittagong & back last night With my GDE flash tune from Stu @ Murchison Products.

I actually got it down to 9.2. Pretty Happy with this result.
Totally recommend this for anyone with a 3.0 CRD Commander or G.C.

Thank you Stu!.

Those commanders must glide through the air better, i also have a GDE Tune on my WH Grand and im stuffed if i can anywhere near that.
im not real happy with my economy, and i dont even drive hard.
recently done a 2200 k trip not towing and averaged 11.7 and thats working it out, not using the trip computer.
Do the Commanders run slower at 110kph, mine runs bout 2400

I tried to stay around between 100 kph & 105 kph. Below 110 & on Cruise control with the air on too.
I too get on other trips an average of 11ish. All depends on the terrain & driving style. The above is achievable.
I know in my old XJ Diesel if i sat around 90-100 I got much better economy than going up to 110+

Eddy

Yesterday I was Following an old FC Holden. I was just happy sitting behind him from Moorebank to the Mittagong turn off. He did very well for an old car. Kept on the 100kph mark all the way. Reminiscing I was.

I had the commander for 9 years, it didn't have a tune, but the best economy I could get was around 10.5l/100klm by sitting around 90klm/hr.
Must say I only did that once on a trip to Kal, after that I thought Fluck it it uses what it uses, which worked out to around 12.5 to 14L/100 around town and on a run.
