Thanks Drover - I agree that so long as you have no leaks you only really need to dip the oil to check for quality. Speaking from experience, a thin length of garden / fencing wire and a tissue does the job to check the oil is not brown or burnt etc.

I'm curious dean0 for more detail of the dipstick ordered. Oil to use by the way is:

ATF approved to MB 236.10, MB 236.12, such as Shell ATF 3403/M-115, MOPAR® part number 05127382AA, Fuchs/Shell ATF 3353

This is the company I have ordered the dipstick from http://www.usatoolwarehouse.com/usat...p-OTC0313.html
I think this is the part number for MB which is cheaper but not sure if any difference with being inside a Jeep instead of a merc W140589152100

I did a bit of research on the dipstick and I am about 95% sure it is the correct one, here is the final link I found which I decided to purchase it http://www.millerspecialtools.spx.com/pdf/CY09-215.pdf
Info on transmission NAG1 WA580
Copied from site:
The new engine provides Grand Cherokee 2.7 CRD with a top speed of 118 mph and significantly faster acceleration. It accelerates from zero to 62 mph in just 11.2 seconds, over two and a half seconds quicker than the previous turbo diesel version.

The new engine is mated to the WA 580 5-speed automatic transmission, which is also new to Grand Cherokee. This electronically controlled wide ratio automatic transmission - known in Grand Cherokee as the W5J400 transmission, is derived from that which is currently utilised in the Mercedes-Benz C-, E- and M-Class ranges.
I am in no way affiliated with the above websites

Hope all this makes sense as information come from a lot of sites!

I bought a manual on CD on Ebay from the UK which had the 2.7 included, it was only about AUS$12, has all the info needed.
If you can't locate one PM me and I could email the relevant sect, but it would probably take about 5 emails to send it all.
Thanks Drover I have now purchased one from Ebay + the EPC

Im not familiar with the system on that motor/trans but, there has to be a way for the trans computer to know what the driver wants ,in other words how far the throttle is pushed down.If not a TPS then maybe its reading straight of the throttle, is it a drive by wire system?
Symptons sound almost like trans is "hunting" ,ie cant seem to get the right gear for current load/throttle inputs. My WJ V8 does this when running 33" tyres since I havent corrected the speedo.

Just looked it up, it does use drive by wire & trans gets it signal for accel pos sensor.

My guess is that you'll find at least the code P0700 or P0702 depending on the trans controller you have. In this case I think the dealer software will be useful to diagnose where the fault is.

Could be a lot of things that cause it, it has two input speed sensors, an output speed sensor that uses the ABS for signal and lots lots more. Could be fluid spilled down the shifter, could be.......

The Benz box puts itself into permanent limp mode when it detects what it thinks is a non recoverable condition. This is 2nd gear and reverse only.

I'm no expert but I hope this helps.
