Topic for the week is winches. Best brand? High or low mount? Cable or rope? Etc.

You will get the die hard warn extremist stating that there is no other winch
But I have just got a tmax with rope for a great price recently ( I no its a chinese winch bla bla bla )

One you can afford. If you plan on doing solo remote trips then save up for a good quality one.

Rope, but clean it regularly and try to keep it out of the UV light if possible. I made a quick cheap and easy rope cleaner a little while ago.= out of the guts from a broken hose nozzle and a short piece of 32mm conduit. (an no, thats not my winch rope, just a piece of rope to demonstrate)



As for type/price, not sure I will weigh into that debate, except to say make sure replacement parts are available and as mentioned above if its to pull you out of trouble on a long solo trip then prob spend a little more!

Personally I bought one of the old Tigerz 10,000lb winches with the external brake (not in the drum like most so perfect for rope as no heat), and very happy with my purchase.

Q. How do you tell an external brake from an internal??

I've had nothing to do with winches, hence the question.

best winch would be a gigglepin....... or somthing similar....... someone explain to me how a low mount is better than a high mount? and how steel cable is better than good quality rope?

i think this hot topic is a no brainer..... comp spec gigglepin (or similar), warn high mount, warn low mounts, big gap.........then chinese junk
