Yes it was a rather drastic fix.

However it was my introduction to Jeep, as I bought a XJ to be a boat towing/launching wagon, and a boat with the sale of the BMW.

Liked the Jeep so much it became my daily.

Owned a few Jeeps since, and just Jeeps. So was a blessing really.

I just remembered, with tools laying around I stripped out a complete interior in under 3 hours
The dash can stay on, which brings down the uninstall time.
All to bare metal, to get carpet for my old WJ, in which the previous owner spilled a lot of must in the cargo area.

The charcoal is used in gas masks to absorb the dangerous chemicals. It is a bit more than just charcoal from a fire but fire charcoal is very good at removing odours. just put a heap of it on the carpet and even crush it a bit , I guess you could put bicarb in as well.It will need some hours to work its magic. The charcoal needs to be from a fire in the past few days, the older it is the less effetive it will be. Hope you can fix the terrible smell.

Good advice from 5oclock, and can also recommend it.
If you have a 'home brew' shop near by, they often carry bags of charcoal granules - costs about $20/kg.
Put the carpet in a shallow tub, drum, or similar, fill it with water, pour in the charcoal and soak it for about a week or so, giving it a bit of a stir each day.
Charcoal is great for absorbing odours. My wife won't let me eat onions or curries without it.

Thanks for that. Not sure if I want to go down the route of removing it entirely. Only if I would replace the carpet with vinyl (Still toying with the idea).

I will just put some on it and rub it in. I have already some backs with charcoal hanging in the car to absorb any smell in the air.
