Default DOORS OFF: Answers from QLD Transport

I'm new to the forum but have been looking at all the "no doors" posts from the past. I love driving with doors off and have been digging around and calling around for the past 3 weeks trying to get answers on legalities. Many, many, many, calls and emails to and from QLD transport, ADR, Jeep, and Mods in Brisbane.

In case anyone is interested...

I have an email from QLD transport so its in writing.

They say that if JEEP gives me a letter stating that it complies with ADR than they have no issue with it.

Quote:
"Providing the owner of a vehicle can supply from Jeep Australia a suitably signed letter stating that a 2010 Jeep Wrangler with doors removed will continue to comply with all the relevant ADRs as at the time of manufacture the department will support the use of that vehicle on a road."

There is more to the email, if you're interested let me know and I will post it.

I have been in contact with JEEP Australia and they have given me verbal confirmation that the jeep is OK with doors off, unfortunately when I said "can I have it in writing" the guy said "oh, I'll have to check with legal".

I'm not giving up.... stay tuned.

Cheers

Great stuff! It's good to see that instead of arguing online someone finally persevered with Qld Transport and got an outcome.

Now I'm looking forward to when you look at putting in a decent lift, low backspaced rims & bigger tyres on - I gave up with QLD Transport after a couple of months... >

Cheers,
B.

Let's be realistic, Chrysler Jeep will never give you that letter. There are ADRs related to side impact protection and a vehicle without doors is highly unlikely to comply and would have never been tested in that configuration. Further, many like my son's JK Unlimited have side curtain airbags and these will not function properly (nor will they have been tested) without doors. Ask your insurance company if they will cover you and your passengers if you remove the doors.

Now of course if you accept all these risks and elect to only remove them for offroad events (where you were the only person in the vehicle) then perhaps you can get away with it out of site of the law. I seem to recall a number of JKs at Jambo 2008 that removed their doors on the Jambo site and did runs with them off and then replaced them for the trip home.

If you get that letter I'll buy you a beer.

Well done

Now if only that stated 2005 TJ Wrangler....

Edit: PS hasn't stopped me driving doorless in the past. Haven't had an issue personally with the cops pulling me over due to it.

That might be the eminent brick wall you were bound to get on this issue. Hope not.
I think its absolutely fantastic also that someone didnt read it on the internet but instead picked up the bloody phone and actually bothered to ask the question.
Well done mate. Hope you get the answer you are looking for.
