Default Relocate air intake to cowl in Diesel

So, has anyone done this to the diesel and what are the risks? I was thinking of doing it to free up space for a second battery.

Interested to see how this would look. Just assumed I would need to put a second battery in the boot

I have moved the cold air intake on a older classic car to get cold fresh air at the high pressure point below the windshield but because the cabin air intake is also there it wasn't uncommon to get occasional blowby or fuel fumes in the cabin if the car was parked particularly after a run.

That interesting to note. Because the air box is on the same side as the covered co I think it’ll be an easy modification to do. I was just curious if anyone had done it to the diesel xjs. Plenty of people seem to do it with the 4.0s

Haven't done it however the obvious risk would be introducing increased water into the combustion process. Water in combustion is less than ideal and particularly with diesels lower flash points can be problematic. Then you have the sludging and wear from increased acidic forms associated with water in combustion which would be significant given the lower grade fuels used in Australia and if your saving a bit of cash with lower grade oil.

There wouldn't be much room for a dryer so you would at least need to plumb in a decent water trap.

Then you are putting another 30 odd kg forward of the front axle in a fairly lightly sprung vehicle which may not sound that significant but it will surprise you.

I’m in England but not sure of the quality of diesel here. I have space for a second battery already as I don’t have ac or abs but it’s in the same side as the current battery. You think two battery’s on one side of the engine would be two much weight on one side?

sorry didn't even look where you were, I think you would be on the higher end euro spec fuels (for now at least) with about a 10th of the sulphur content we have.

It's not "too much weight" as that's quite subjective and depends how much your willing to sacrifice. But it does have an effect particular when it gets forward of the axle (I don't even know if where your thinking would be forward of the axle). Strap a weight in similar to that of the battery your shooting for and drive round a few weeks. It won't show you the long term sag in the spring it will cause but it will at least show you the different feel
