Sorry to hear but this is a major failure and most likely traceable if a good mechanic pulls it down and reports on it. There are laws agains items failing well before their "expected" life despite being out of warranty!
If all else fails you could probably pick up an economic write-off from the auctions witha perfect engine but damaged body similar to GoJeep picking up his GC as his Willys donor. Parting out the rest of the body may offset most of the wreck purchase.
I know it would be depressing but not the end of the world!
Goodluck and hope it works out.
Matt

Make sure you get a diagnostic print out of what codes were up before you start tinkering. If you end up with some sort of claim you will need it.

Remember, you can look for wrecks outside Jeep...according to Wiki the OM642 engine was also available in:

: C-Class, CLS, E-Class, S-Class, ML-Class, GLK-Class, GL-Class, G-Class, R-Class, the Vito / Viano, and the Dodge / Freightliner / Mercedes-Benz Sprinter.

Might be worth enquiring abut these and compatability to increase your chances of sourcing a good condition engine.

Matt.
