My mirrors were looking a bit sad recently as there was quite a bit of black paint flaking off where corrosion had started behind the paint. As you all probably know they are made of Ally so where it was exposed there was the usual white furry stuff. I was gonna get them sandblasted and then re paint them but instead I took off the remaining paint with paint remover then put them in a diluted solution of hydrochloric acid (which you can get from any pool shop) which I had in the garage. After a lot of fizzing and about 30 mins I took them out and all the corrosion had bubbled nicely off.
After a good rinse I re-sprayed them in satin black and they are as good as new.
NOTE: I didn't put the whole mirror in.....only the metal part. Although the small corregated grommet where the mirror joins the metal bracket got into the solution they came out fine. I wouldn't like to chance the plastic though.
