Hi Duncan,
buying a second hand winch has its risks aswell, you could be just buying other peoples problems or you may get a good one.
if you have the coin a known brand eg Warn, TJM, Ramsey ect will always be gooy value with good warrinty & back up service. Its for those reasons I would not buy a winch of Ebay because who do you take it to if there is ever an issue. There are cheap winches & quality cheap winches.
All cheap winches will get you out of the sh!t when the time arrises. But these cheap winches are cheap for a reason, & if you look after it you will have it for a long time.
(1)I recomend that before you install your cheapie winch take off the G-box end & pack in some good quallity grease & then re-seal it with a good amt of sickaflex, as cheapie winches are known to be hit & miss when it comes to seals & seem to scrimp on the grease. If you want to go 1 step further you could drill & tap a thread in the bottom as a drain hole release with a thin hose & 1 way fule filter on the end, aswell as a breather on the top, this will let out any moisture that comes from condensation when over-heating.
(2) take the motor end off tap in a breather on the top & a drain in the bottom(using 1 way filters),re-seal the motor with sickaflex.
(3) when using the winch use the 30 - 15 rule winch for 30 seconds & let it rest for 15 seconds, this is when you are winching in or out.
A continous winch (esp under load) can build up alot of excess heat in the motor & g-box as your winch cools condensation will happen & that can kill winches. have fun, think of what you are trying to achive & look after it & you will have your winch for a long time regardles of the brand.
the good quality winches should already have good seals, be packed with pleanty of grease have a stronger motor that wont heat up as bad & some will have drain bungs in them.
cheers piggy.

The quality cheap winches eg:- T-max, Ironman, tigers 11 are probably the pick of the bunch in their price bracket.
There are some really really cheapies eg:- Aldi, supercheap & some of the chinese import places.

The old TJM OX winch was just a slightly modified T/max, & some customers said they wouldn't have anything else, been the best bla bla bla, while some others wanted to physically insert them up TJM's bot-bot upon their disappointed failure & return, the main fault they had were the seals, they were hit & miss, some seals were great so no problems, but some were bad letting water in causing failure.because of that they now make their own winches in their own factory, these winches were designed by passionate extreme 4wders (mainly ex winch comp guys) obviously the ex comp guys wanted them to be high mounts with air free spool ect, but common sense prevailed & they have produced a winch that will fit into all makes of bullbars. They didnt want any more warranty issues so all of the internals come from the same factory that Warn does & they have installed a double seal system to stop any water.
These winches are gaining respect & have now been discovered by the likes of Murchisons (qld Jeep specialist) & other 4wd accessory experts who are now selling these as an addition to their stock lines.
so if you are looking at an old TJM OX, treat it like you would treat a Chinese winch & re-set the seals with sickaflex first.
I hope this has helped, & I hope that this dosnt get me banned again.
cheers piggy
