I'm sure that they will allow you to extend it to more than 48 hours when you explain that you are driving a brand new car accross the country. VicRoads permits are valid for 28 days from memory, so you'll be right there. Pretty sure the VicRoads ones are cheap too. i.e. definitely under $100. Last one I got was about 10 years ago and it was only $40.
Good luck!

Vic roads 28 day permit is under $70 ~ I think it was $64 in January. You can drive in any state on it. When I got my XJ it was in QLD & I drove it from Bris to northern Vic on the permit. You are supposed to get a permit from the state where the car is being moved from but as the QLD permits are hard to get & only for 2 or 3 days I went with the Vic permit. Strictly speaking you are not meant to drive the car at night but if you loose the second page of the permit with that condition on, when you get stopped ( I got stopped over 20 times ~ you dont have plates on the car) the police will not know about the night restriction. It worked for me.
I have previously moved cars from Vic to SA on Vicroads permits without problems as well.
