I'm not sure contact cleaner is the best for cleaning the MAF but it probably isn't as bad as some of the alternatives.

Using a solvent like this is the only way I'm aware of to clean the MAF.

It is probably best to replace it if you have any doubt.

Not sure if some of this stuff is just rebadged but there is proper MAF cleaner. Not sure I'd be hitting it with compressed air either unless you are really careful. The wire in them is quite delicate too much air could damage it.

I have managed to find some sensors from a German company, about 140euros. I need to ask my friend in Germany to check if they are legit.

I used a low pressure on the compressor and tried not to blow on the sensor itself. Used the air for cleaning the oil residue on the casing and the wire mesh. Didn't do any difference, will check locally where I can get the proper sensor cleaner and give it a go, if not will get a new sensor.
I wonder if the oil from the separator pipe seeped its way to the MAF was the reason of the failure? It wasn't much but who knows. Maybe should get a new separator as well just for a peace of mind.

If by separator you are referring to the PCV (crankcase ventilation) system then it dumps downstream of the MAF into the turbo right before the inlet. The MAF is upstream just off the airbox. They do get a bit oily over time but not sure if the PCV oil can seep that far back and uphill. When I used the MAF cleaner on mine I did not need anything else to blow any residue off.

The PCV is not primarily an oil separator so replacing will not necessarily change the amount of blowby that is being fed back in through the turbo. Generally a failing PCV stops venting and therefore allows pressure in the engine to build and oil to possibly blow past seals. If you have a lot of blowby then maybe an aftermarket oil separator would benefit. Search Provent.

Yes I was referring to PCV. I have very little residue in the pipe and MAF housing, so probably normal at this km. Thanks again fester, great info as usual.
Prev owner said he never cleaned the engine bay in 7 years and it definitely looks like that , so probably with some regular housekeeping, any build up can be avoided. Need to do some spring cleaning..

I'd be more concerned about the crap in the manifold from the EGR. Have you read about disabling that yet and seen my pics about how gummed up the manifold can get. It's so chav (don't know how to spell that or if it fits but had to throw it in somewhere).

You can get the Wynns EGR3 so easy over there so that would be handy to do.
