What codes are you seeing at the moment out of curiosity? When is the black smoke present, under load or at idle?
The job is very doable yourself if you are reasonable confident with tools and can read a service manual. I'd reckon you could have it done easily in a day.
To do the job properly you'll need a seat cutter (~$60) to reface the injector seat, some Torx bits and a torque wrench capable of working at 7nm. You also need the injectors, stretch bolts, copper washers and special ceramic grease to complete the job all available from MB for a reasonable price.
You shouldn't need an injector puller if there is no black death or if the injectors were installed with the correct grease in the first place. Before you do the job though, I'd be inclined to keep drizzling a combination of engine oil and WD-40 around all of the injectors to loosen any crud up to make life easier.
Some people also suggest loosening the injector hold down bolt and running the engine to pop the injectors using the engine compression.
I've got a post on here somewhere about how to cut the holes, once you pull the plastic cowl off it is pretty easy to line everything up. You'll only need a 50mm hole to get 4 and 5 out.
