Default Diesel xj stalling

Hey everyone,

I've got a 2000 cherokee with the 2.5 vm diesel in it. It's got a problem where the engine cuts out when you go to stop/slow down at an intersection. The engine light flashes to when it's happening. It doesn't happen at every intersection and it will start back up afterwards and carry on fine.

Any ideas?

Unfortunatley could be many things .The fact that engine light comes on would point to a timing issue (crankshaft sensor, injector no 1 sensor) or low fuel pressure (dirty fuel/filter/water in fuel filter) or dirty MAF sensor ....or intermitent /broken wire connection to any of sensors .

The followings also can affect engine but unlikely to bring MIL light on .
Wiring rubbing against chasie or other things in the engine bay.
Injectors clogging up , air filter dirty , low compression on one or all cylinders .
EGR valve blocked or to much gunk in the inlet manifold .
And last thing that I can think of would be the throttle pedal sensor out of range and maybe needs readjusting .
This are only suggestions but can give you a bit of idea where to start .

are you applying the brake to slow down? The throttle is sometimes shut back when the brake is applied.
There is no fuel pressure sensor so it is unlikely the cause.
When it idles, what rpm do you see? It maybe set too low. it is adjusted by moving the top of the IP. be very careful if you try & adjust, its not straight forward.
Unlikely to be #1 injector sensor as this doesnt normally cause MIL light. More likely to be a bad connection. When it happens do you get a message on the odometer, like no bus ?

Mine does the same thing. I found a few instances of this and the fix seemed to be replacing the IP.

I got a replacement IP then had back surgery, so never actually swapped mine out to confirm.

I've since bought a pajero (7str) and my xj is now unreg for a rainy day..

When I braked I would clutch and blip the throttle. I'll try and find the thread...

Other than the stalling issue, car ran beautifully.

Cheers,
