Default Select Trac vs Quadradrive

So I have the CRD model which comes with Selec Trac vs. the Quadradrive in the V8.

I wonder if I can use the Quadradrive diff carrier in the CRD having then a Quadradrive, which supposed to be better (at least what I was reading in other forums).

I cannot see any indicator that there is any electronic component involved and the axles seem to be the same So I guess i comes down to the diff carrier. Unless the Selec Trac is part of the transfer case.

I still have a Dana 44A axle from my old V8 donor Jeep and wanted to weld a truss on and then install it (with new gear ratio). If the Quadradrive diff carrier would work I do not have to uninstall the existing but can drive it till I swap the entire axle.

Check the forum. I think I remember reading somewhere that you will need to space out the ring gear (or machine some off), as the pinion size is different. Other than that, I believe others have done it.

Edit: Or was it that the carrier is slightly offset?? One or the other.

Thanks RTB, I will swap an entire axle from a V8 Limited to the CRD and I will change the ring gear ratio anyway (from 3.73 to 4.56) and have the new gears already available. So that should take care of this. And I have a locker for the front axle with the same gear ratio as well. I would then just need Quadradrive in the rear.

But will read thru the post. Thanks for the hint.

You might need to read up on changing ratios in the CRD. Apparently they throw codes if you do.

I discuss the conversion in a old post. I installed a CRD 3.55 varilock carrier in a 3.73 petrol diff in the rear Dana 44a successfully but you need to use the varilock axles as well. The crd diff in the Dana 35 at the front needs a different carrier to Change the ratio from 3.54 to 3.73 gears or you could make a spacer and use longer bolts.
The varilock does work very well and the car is way more versatile even just the rear varilock. I think I would prefer an ARB front locker if I ever needed more ‘bite’.

Completely forgot to respond to your message. Thanks a lot for the info. I ended up in getting the CAN Bus Filter from the guys from jeepwjs.com. Initially I just wanted to solder the TCM BUT then I read that the filter device also supports an NP242 transfer case swap and it happened that I have one lying around in my basement, ready to be installed (well I still need to fix a couple of things but this is a great option on the long run).

I am planning to swap the entire front axle which is a Dana 30. As far as I can see the front in the CRD is a Dana 30 as well. I have an ARB air locker already installed on it and the gear ration is 4.56. So once the CAN Bus filter is installed and I have the Dana 44a prepped with a truss, I will install the same gear ration on it as well and install it all together. I will then use the vari-lock carrier from the CRD and the axle and run it on the V8 prepped axle.

Why not tune the TCU?

I've read that ring gear spacers are a tricky endeavor, as the ring gear is centered on the carrier, so unless the spacer has provision for centering the ring gear, it's risky.
