VM deso 2.5/2.8 is belt not chain as far as I know

Can't comment on if these are a hemi engine or not as that relates to the design of the combustion chamber and I've never seen it personally BUT usually when anyone refers to anything Jeep, Chrysler, etc and Hemi in the one sentence it means a petrol engine not a diesel

He cleared the codes and ran the engine and commented that something was wrong - Well F#$%en' dur. Did he say anything else?

$1000 to fix it might be on the money. not sure but I paid less than that to have a Tbelt replaced with all new components and that was a Jeep rates for parts and labour

I'd suggest you find someone that knows the engine (might even be a Jeep dealer somewhere) or at least knows diesels, and get a second opinion on the time + cost of fixing it.

Definitely a Belt driven engine...I have had my belt replaced twice by the Dealers....once due to overheating problem damaging heads and second time due to age of belt ie. 7 years! Definitely give this mechanic a miss!

Should be members here who can do the work for you or who can recommend someone who can do it.

What new codes do you get now that the old codes have been cleared?

I get no new codes after clearance. I called my Jeep dealership in Berwick and the guy I spoke to just said "it's going to cost you a fortune, plus I don't think I really want to do a diesel head job at the moment". So doesn't truly fill new with much confidence in the dealership. I asked him for some suggestions of a diesel mechanic in the area who's knowledgeable in this stuff, so he referred me to MTQ engine systems in Dandenong. I gave them a call, the guy was nice enough and said they don't deal with whole engine just components.

I'm tempted to do it myself but I've never done it before and the thing that turns me off the most is not having the specialised tools required.

Default timing

Just finished doing my timing belt etc..
I've done all my own mechanical over the years though I'm an auto electrician by trade and so have done a few timing belts and I can tell you this was the worse car I ever had the misfortune to fix.
I used a cheap chinese copy of the VM timing tools which didn't help.
I swear with them locked into the cam you can rock the cam a degree or two on the pin so you are left sweating on whether you have it bang on. As for the flywheel locking pin well forget it and even the workshop manual says to stick in an allen key tool to line up top dead center ( super accurate right!!!!!). And then when you tighten the cam gears back on, there is no key-way to align them so you better be sure as hell that they don't turn in the slightest when you tighten them up.
All that said and done it starts and runs fine. Not the most confidence inspiring set up.
Friend of mine once said "ignorance is bliss" many guys have just got in there and done it and it works so yours must be out a bit!! Plenty of engines will start and run a tooth out just won't rev or pull well usually.
I just hope with mine I don't have any of the misfortunes some have had liked dropped valves leaking head gaskets and the list goes on.

Good Luck with it.

He's opinion is that the head timing (valve timing)wasn't done correctly. I was quoted $1000.

The mechanic reckoned these Jeeps have hemi engines which are chain not belt driven which I'm pretty sure i's wrong. So paying $1000 for a possible solution?

There is no codes showing or cels after they were cleared.

Its a VM engine. If you look up about the VM 428 you should find plenty. The 428 is the 2.8 ltr, yours is a 2.5 but the only difference is you have a smaller bore. Its not a hemi, its 4 valves per cylinder. There is no such thing as a hemi diesel.
Have you done a compression test yet?
Its a bit of work to check the valve timing. Don't know if you are up to it. That mechanic is not up to it.
There are mechanics/companies mentioned on this group that could do the work. Jeep dealers are too expensive.
If a diesel has its belt miss fitted by a couple of teeth you would have valves hitting pistons.
Given the way it runs & your lack of knowledge about VM diesels, I cant understand why you purchased it.

Try start a new post "Looking for good Mechanic or replacement 2.5 L CRD engine" and see what response you get.

You need to start climbing into the head area to see if there is any major damage and then decide if it is worth fixing, finding a replacement motor or selling the Jeep for spares.

There was a post on Lost I think where a 2.5 L owner asked about dropping a 2.8 L motor in as these would be newer and more common.

My two cents worth was that it would be difficult to fit the new 2.8 L engine complete with the new wiring required, new ECM, SKIM, EGR etc, if you intend fitting the engine with the variable-vane Turbo to get best performance.

However I believe that if you drop the variable-vane Turbo and used your existing fixed-vane Turbo, ECM, SKIM, wiring etc. then the 2.8 L motor should hopefully drop in easily as it is basically the same block.

You can delete the EGR in the process as the current ECM does not look for the EGR but only checks that the existing EGR solenoid coil is not shorted out or open circuit. One problem is that you probably will need to use the 2.5 L MAP sensor as it may have different characteristics to the 2.8 L MAP sensor and the 2.5 sensor has two mounting bolts compared to the single bolt on the 2.8 L motor.

You would also have to re-fit the existing 11 volt Glow Plugs.

All in all a lot of work involved....start stripping down the motor to see what damage is there!
