Default The Future of Diesel

I'm looking to by the 2011 Grand Cherokee Diesel when it comes out, however after learning about the euro 5 and 6 emmission laws, what happens to old Diesel engines after 2015?

I read that the new Diesel engine in the Grand Cherokee is of euro 5 specs only.

I'm planning to keep the next car for at least 7-10 years and no am concerned whats going to happen?

Perhaps I'm better going with the Petrol Pentastar as it can take E85 fuel which may be sort of "future proof"?? Even though its less efficient, servicing costs less.

Any one with industry knowledge could you please give your comments?

Mossey why would you do that?

The emission laws only are applicable to those in force when the new car is built. i.e. car do not have to comply with contemporary standards which change over time. If you buy a new car that is say 2011 and is Euro 5 compliant you don't have to comply with Euro 6 when it becomes the new standard.

Hope that helps clear it up.

Ok then, I wasn't sure on how it affected older vehicles. I saw this quote in the following link;
"As soon as the Euro 5 and Euro 6 standards enter into force, Member States must refuse the approval, registration, sale and introduction of vehicles that do not comply with these emission limits."
http://europa.eu/legislation_summari.../l28186_en.htm
I read that as you may not even be able to register vehicles that don't comply, but must be wrong.

The EU largely wants to be seen as the leader in 'saving the world' (alongside California). Australia are miles behind most other nations about caring for the environment. Sit tight mate, don't worry about it...unless you are saving for the Wranger 2020 model here in Aus.

So that'd be behind China, behind India, behind the US, behind Russia, Indonesia and Pakistan (I think we've accounted for more than half the world's population with that little group) - give me a break about Australia being behind most other nations. Typical green brainwashing bullsh!t. Consider the ever expanding areas both on land and in the sea being locked up in this country to prevent decent law abiding and caring citizens from enjoying the natural environment.

Sorry for the hijack, but this populist green garbage really riles me.
