Default Toyota D4D

Its interesting hearing on hear the complaints from some diesel jeep owners.

I saw a bit of that 4wdtv last night with a company from Bendigo talking about how bad the 3ltr Nissan diesel is. They have done hundreds of conversions back to 4.2 diesels.
I just read this.

D4-D When will this manufacturer be forced into a recall? Call this post a "Call to Action" for owners of this engine. After talking with the 3rd customer today about ways to prevent "another" engine blow up, I cant hold my thoughts and comments any more. This most recent customer, just 30 minutes ago, explained to me the usual failure we are seeing and hearing more and more of in this engine. You have probably already worked out what engine it is. Injector rattle and single cylinder failures are becoming more apparent as they get older. Just do a Google search of "Injector Rattles" and within the first 10 results you will come across numerous forums discussing this ever increasing issue with this make of vehicle. I think the youngest one I have witnessed was today. At about 110,000 km this customer was driving up a hill when suddenly a big puff of black smoke and the engine stopped. Upon dismantling of the engine it was clear a single cylinder was melted and cracked. All other 3 cylinders in perfect condition. As usual the manufacturers dealer blamed "dirty fuel"...then asked if he had a chip...and more questions ensued all in an attempt to direct blame at other things. Of course dirty fuel could damage the injectors BUT virtually impossible to single out one injector. Even a chip over powering may fail an engine BUT all cylinders. Remember this was just another of many we hear every week with "single cylinder failure". The dealer also went on to state that "dirty fuel" is such a problem that the said manufacturers dealer network were now warning customers to "claim these failures on insurance blaming dirty fuel." What's the Fix? I think a combined effort by owners to get class action started through one of the high profile firms like Maurice Blackburn Lawyers would be a start. Message us enough and I think we will contact Maurice Blackburn Lawyers ourselves! We have many customers who have sadly experienced much financial burden from these single injector and subsequent engine failures. Sadly the owners that come into us telling us of these failures are so confused about dirty fuel and other bad vibes about Diesels they are reluctant to buy another Diesel. This is our industry and has been for many decades and to see this type of 'ducking and weaving' by a manufacturer is very annoying to say the least. Just read the link to see how hard manufacturers in this country are working to protect themselves from FAIR competition. http://www.aaaa.com.au/news.asp?id=195

So hard to pin point blame for this type of thing. Everyone blames everyone else. There is so many variables it's hard to scientifically say exactly what goes wrong in each case. No doubt adding a chip adds another layer of complexity. Chips make lots of money for retailers and workshops so they will naturally blame other issues. Who knows what is really happening!

if it was over fueling from the chip you would see damage in every cylinder. These failures are always just 1 cylinder. My guess is a dribble from an injector. This will cause damage to the cylinder it occurs on. These direct injection injectors are not up to the job just yet.

This on Baileys Diesel Group site is also a problem

There has been quite a bit of chatter lately on the Hilux and Prado boards about the clogged oil sump pickup problem with the Toyota Hilux and Prado D4D. The two biggest questions are “what caused it?“, and “how did it happen so fast?”. As anyone who has experienced this problem knows, it is a costly and catastrophic event.
What causes the Hilux/Prado clogged oil sump pickup?
The main cause of this is failure of the common rail injector seal. When the seal around the tip of the injector starts to fail and leak, oil drips into the cylinder overnight. Worse is when the carbon gases blow by, fouling and thickening the oil, blocking the oil pickup, and starving the motor. Nightmare.
The best way to prevent the oil sump pickup getting clogged is proper maintenance and inspection. At BDG,we have seen the Hilux and Prado go from perfectly in specs injectors and a squeaky clean oil sump pickup to leaking injectors, smoke-blowing and a clogged oil sump pickup in less than 10,000 km. The first point is to make sure your maintenance is done on time, and to check and see if you have a clogged oil sump pickup screen every time you change your oil. The second point is to know the symptoms and causes of injector failure, and catch this early on before the damage is done.
In a previous post, we covered the symptoms and causes of common rail injector failure, but here might be a good time to cover the highlights.
Your Hilux or Prado has white smoke and a rattle after cold start. This is usually caused by the leaking injector seal we talked about. A simple check for this is to park the truck, nose down, overnight. In the morning, if the symptoms are worse, your common rail injectors are failing. Remember, when this starts happening, your oil sump pickup screen is getting clogged, and it takes no time for the damage to be done.
Hilux and Prado low rpm rattle. This is usually caused by a clogged EGR and manifold. It is a good policy, and good maintenance, to remove, clean and inspect the intake each time you change the oil.
I do all of my maintenance, why do my injectors fail? The fuel your truck burns and normal wear and tear is the cause of most injector failure. The new common rail injector operates under extremely high pressure, and this speeds up the failure. They also fire more times than previous injection systems, so bingo. Next, we know that the chemicals in our diesel fuel, and particulate in the fuel, are the death sentence for common rail injectors. What to do? Baileys recommends a one micron filter, and driving the beast on a daily basis, to minimize the fuel related problems.
Lastly, while a clogged oil sump pickup is a devastating event, a costly failure on the Hilux and Prado, the good news is that it is easy to inspect and check at every service, whether you service it yourself or take it to the dealer. Take off the oil sump covers, take out the screen, and spray it with carb cleaner or degreaser, then put it all back, making sure to seal everything properly. For the less mechanically inclined, we should be putting out a video on this shortly on our Youtube channel, so stay tuned.

Yeah I get what you mean but Toyota will simply say it wasn't designed for chips etc and blame them. It was operating outside design parameters etc. Of course a few experienced mechanics will know exactly the cause but proving it beyond doubt to Toyota is much more difficult.

Their V8 is also a problem. How many V8's have you seen towing a big van on a round Australia trip? ~ The oil pick up on them is plastic & on a long hard trip when the oil gets hot the pick up softens & collapses & oil starvation soon occurs. I know an engine re-conditioner who is continually rebuilding them.

Is that both the twin turbo in the 200 and single turbo in the 76?
