Default Bye Bye Clutch

I think my clutch is on its last legs.

During the course of my driving over the weekend I noticed that up till 3rd gear my acceleration was normal.

However, once I got to approximately 3000 rpm in 3rd gear I was losing acceleration. the revs were still going up to the red but i was not accelerating.

it is an end of 08 CRD unlimited. With 67,000 on the clock.

I was hoping the clutch would last a lot longer than this. but to be honest and fair, it has not had the easiest life.

It is going to the dealer on Thursday to see if it is the clutch or something else which could be potentially causing the issue.

My question is?

Should I just replace the clutch with a genuine clutch fitted by the jeep dealer?

Or is there another option of a heavy duty aftermarket clutch I could fit which would last longer and be a better option?

I am intending on progressively modifying the jeep more over the next couple of years.

Any sugestions or opinions would be greatly recieved. i am in the geelong area.

I think you may have little choice - i'd be VERY ( actually amazed ) surprised if Jeep covered it.

You will also find the cost of a replacment clutch and the dual mass flywheel ( frequently not repairable ) to be staggering.

Start saving

I think this has been covered quite a bit in the past, and unless things have changed I think the only replacement clutch for a CRD is the genuine Jeep one. Nobody to my knowledge has made an aftermarket clutch for the CRD yet...

Yep nil chance of the warranty covering it (its something like 1 year or 20,000kms on the clutch).

This is actually something that makes me very nervous. I have only 35k on my CRD and I've been pretty kind to my clutch but I noticed the other day that when accelerating up a hill it started to surge a bit, almost as if the clutch was slipping then grabbing over and over. I backed off and it hasn't done it again since. Doesn't make me feel too confident though...

Not true, only friction material is not covered, my clutch / flywheel was replaced due to failure, in your case tho sounds like the CRD's torque has killed the friction disk...

tdwrangler has it right mate. the clutch is not covered by warranty after more than 2 years. there is at this time no aftermarket clutch and flywheel kit available for the crd. usually by the time the friction plate goes, it has scored the flywheel to the extent that the flywheel needs replacing as well. the problem with a dual mass flywheel, is that unless it is in perfect condition, the face cannot be skimmed. you won't know until it is dropped out what kind of condition it is in. a new flywheel about 3600 bucks. on the basis that the thing is not under warranty, a dealer will not send the flywheel out to be skimmed, even if it is able to be done. they will only put it back together and retyrn it to you with a bill for work done or install a new flywheel. the other option is to get it done privately. it will cost about the same if you need a new flywheel, but a private workshop would skim it if it was possible, and save you 3 grand or more. the down side to this is that if you do it privately you will void your warranty. a 2008 is almost out of warranty anyway, so it may be worth the risk. good luck
