Default Front upper strut mounts.

Hi,

I've just today replaced the OEM struts in my WH with Bilstein 5100 struts, in an effort to resolve a suspension clunk I get on rebound.

Apart from the rack and rod ends, which are fine, all other bushes and ball joints in the front are now new and fine, but the clunk is still there!

The only other thing it possibly could be is upper strut mounts, which at 138 km I assume are still original. I confess that I did not think to check these other than a visual inspection when re assembling the struts, but they kind of looked ok. But, would they be the culprit?

It's kind of like when the spring rebounds faster than the damped rate of the shock, and this is reversing the load on the mount, and making the noise, which also unsettles the steering a bit.

Any ideas guys? I'm getting over it.

Cheers,

Robert

If the upper strut bolt is not tightened up enough you get a clunk.
I thought mine were more then tight enough but I was able to get another quarter of a turn on the top strut bolt that fixed the noise.
Felt like I was actually going to break the bolt with the amount of tension I needed.

If I tightened mine any more then the 8mm hex on the top of the shaft would end up round.

Maybe I should put a washer under the nut to give it more crush?

Default rebound thump

As there is no rubber stop for this IFS setup, it has to be either
a) play in top strut mount, or
b) ball joints

I had an annoying thump on rebound
I rebushed my lower control arms & replaced lower ball joint, noise still there
Set of JB upper control arms fixed my problem
So check your upper ball joints too

Cheers

New upper arms courtesy of Moog. And the old arms had good bushes and ball joints too.

It was discussed previously that there is an issue with the rack, and I personally can't find anything wrong with the rack, and neither could the wheel aligner.

It must be upper strut mounts, but honestly I don't know. Clarky has seen similar symptoms to mine (clunk on rebound) and I am hoping someone else can corroborate this.

Cheers,

Robert

Stu from Murchison Products gave me the heads up on the issue when I purchased my kit from him, if anyone in Oz knows the WH he does.

Yes I would concur that Stu Murchison is the authority on these. Did he just tell you to continue to tighten the nut? I would reckon mine has gone as far down as it can go, it felt like it came up hard on the shoulder of the end of the thread.
