Here are some comments from Michael at Airflow:
Here are some observations to considered.
Exterior or internal filters fitted to snorkels.
These filters are after market.
They interrupt the flow of air which has an overall detrimental effect to the out put as follows
A major decrease to separation that the air ram provides.
Therefore increasing the foreign-mater collected in the after market filter.
The over all airflow can decrease dramatically depending on the amount of contaminates in the filter.
If the local atmospheric condition are such that this type of filter is needed,
the right course of action is to fit a cyclone separator.
This will certainly reduce the flow but will protect the engine and give over all better performance.
The change of air direction needs to as much as possible be directed ( vectored ) to limit the turbulence and therefore the friction losses.
There are engineering and aerodynamic solutions to this to a point.
The major limiting factors:
People's perception of what they think it should be to be effective when the reality is vastly different. There are a number of brands that follow this model.
Type of Air Ram. Fashion has in a number of brands limited the ability of the snorkel to work correctly.
Aesthetic shape of the snorkel in relationship to the vehicle
Body shape and contour of the vehicle.
Obstacles in the location of the structure of the vehicle i.e.
Position of air cleaner
The position of the various structures and their orientation to the airflow.
The relationship of possible Air ram input to snorkel body , engine volume and destiny requirements.
Certain ratios need to be applied in order for the snorkel to do its job of providing increased performance in Fuel, engine emissions, torque, power, cooler air, separation of contaminates.
Atmospheric conditions do create a large number of possibilities.
The majority can be accommodated in a compromise of fashion and the physical requirements of an effective snorkel design
Hope this is useful
Kind regards Michael
Don t have Dyno data
It will be some time before we have this.
I have simulation data which has proved to be close to actual
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ++++
I have seen some very pretty snorkels, but I would go with a functional one every time.
Someone posted a photo a while back of one with air intake over the top of the windscreen - and a very small intake at that. The tube ran down the A pillar. Looked lovely - but it would channel the water straight into the intake.
Function over form every time for me.
Cheers
