Thanks MM for your tips . So far got the rear shaft out, left the front one still attached to transfer case (cross member in the way). Removed linkages to transfer case , undone exaust pipe flanges next to gearbox , removed clutch slave cylinder . Getting it ready to angle down the lot so I can reach to crankshaft sensor and hopefully maybe get to the 2 top bolts.
Getting to them from the selector hole sounds more tempting tough and I'll try that first.
I was thinking the same as you on the starter . Definetly more room without the gear box on.
Had a look at the atv hydraulic jacks at Supercheap , $129 not bad but just another thing that will collect the dust after this job . I think still I'll get one (it pays for itself) .
Cheers
Andrei........now back under it .

When I pulled the gearbox I removed the transfer case to make it easier to manage. It's easy to remove by itself and I could bench it off by myself without a jack.

Good luck mate!

whenever I R&R heavy, uneven objects (like a GB+TX combo)

I make a custom frame with offcut timber & wire, then use 2, or preferably even up to 4 trolley jacks to lower, wheel & raise with ease and safety

gives you millimeter precision at install, when u really dont want to hang things up.

OR..place rimless tyre & mats under GB +TX, then unbolt..like an elephant giving birth,
drag out from underneath with rope around waist like oxen

Bought one of those ATV hydraulic jack and know I'm trying to figure out how to
secure and balance the GB+TB on it . A wood frame sounds like a good idea (Thanks for that) .
Have to make up some sort jig because the ATV jack doesn't goes up that high.
Took the gear lever of the gbox . Seems to be a good access point for the 2 bolts up on top but still have to angle down the lot to see them somehow .
Once I removed top bolts and harness connectors I think I'll use the ATV jack to ballance and secure than use a trolley jack under the front of gbox too and slide the thing back .
Maybe I'm a bit paranoid with safety but Geee... this thing is long and heavy .
Cheers,
Andrei

Its not on a hoist so it cant fall very far.
I just had a few piles of blocks of wood & by taking a piece out at a time was able to let it down without a thud.
The cross member helps to stop it tipping sideways too much.
Probably gets bashed around more out in the bush.
Just dont lay under it & let it pin you down.
Because its angled back, it will tend to fall back easy.

NO!... safety is good!...never forget it wants to roll off at some stupid, unpredictable angle, just to make a dick outta ya.

Interesting that there are only about 3 of us commenting that have actually done this on this type of jeep. amlav is about to join this group.
He will find that once he lowers the back of the box to tilt it so he can get at the top bell housing bolts, he will need to support it under the cross arm slightly off set because the transfer case causes it to be unbalanced. Once tilted & the gear leaver stub is out of the hole, he will be able to support the front of the box & undo the remainder of the bolts & cps. It will then want to move towards the back as its tilted. It doesnt need to be ridgedly held in place while doing all this, better if it can be wobbled around a little.
That is what happened when I last had mine out.
