Many billionaires and celebrities have an old Jeep of some description sitting in one of their garages. Elvis started it of course.

Had two XJs ,94 and a 2000.No real problems with either .Replaced a few suspension bushes at higher klms.First one in the end needed new diff .The 2000 towed a Cub off road camper trailer most of its life 390000 klms when sold ,never even put a new filter in the auto box.did change atf every 25000.! Always changeg other fluids well before service book stated.Never really thought about breaking down. Now Got a 2010 WHGC diesel ,plus WK2 GC Overland.diesel .Both good vehicles BUT always thinking where I am going what could go wrong and what spares I should take.! Says it all really !To many electronics etc.

Good:

Cheap to buy, (but price is now rising imo)

Cheap to maintain especially if you do your own work, and use Rock Auto

Well supported with technical know-how on forums

very capable off road & easy to modify to improve that

probably best value for $ on a serious mid to large 4wd

Not so good:

not frugal on fuel (but as good as any older large petrol 4wd)

lack of safety features on early models

rear end setup (like most age comparable 4wds)

electrical issues ( I fix them myself though)

thanks for the compliment "lulu belle" its one of those cars that looks great from 20 feet hahaha, ive had the roof and bonnet resprayed ( due to clear coat failing)

that said over the many years ive looked after it, and sorted problems as soon as they appeared, i didn't let stuff mount up.

as for its short comings, huh that's just charm, ask any Harley Davidson owner
you'll get a similar response.

i think we all know that Japanese vehicles are more reliable ( just ask any 4x4 australian magazine) but none have the heritage or charm of an early Jeep

while my daily driver is a WK2 i think the XJ has more charm

ok ill stop now time for another scotch hahah

ok one more thought, so what about oil leaks, that's just rust proofing, and who cares about economy , some one has to burn it

ok now im done
