How the hell did you get a socket on it? And drive it square without stripping the torx head?

Maybe pour some acrylic over it. Is that what they use for custom gear knobs like you used to find with something encased inside?

I have no idea but it sound reasonable.
The P/N for mine is 5273590AB

I think this Billet aluminium one may be a better option as it could be machined to fit exactly P/N 82210359AB

On the way home from a camping trip after a quick stop, upon restart the Jeep made a very rattly noise and stalled out almost immediately. Tried a restart, more horrible noises, a exhaust leak type sound and again stalled out.

Immediately assumed it was relatively terminal as i was thinking either timing chain or dropped valve so got towed back home. Pulled the plugs and found this one. I'm guessing timing chain has skipped a few teeth and lunched a valve.

Time to yank the hemi out and see what kind of massacre is awaiting me

They are known for dropping valve seats.

Bugga!
Sounds like all the other (relatively rare.) reports of dropped valve seats.
Consensus seems to be after shutting down hot, the head/seats exceed their operating temp due to heat-soak (no coolant is circulating.). The valve seats are powdered and expand less than the head, so they loosen.
Then if you start the engine while still "heat soaked", the valve can drop.
It's common for powdered seats to have a retainer nowadays for this reason.

It's got me pretty worried, especially wheeling with our young kids, since it's not exactly something I can do a trail-side bodge to get home.

Atm I just try to leave the engine idling for a while before shutting down, and then try to avoid re-starting it for a while. But I recon electrifying the cooling system with a shutdown delay would be the best protection.

Otherwise there's a timing chain recall in the US affecting some 2009-2012 hemis, see;
http://www.hotrod.com/articles/chrys...-chain-defect/
You can check your recall status here (works for Aus vehiucles too.);
