Do Jeep Wranglers need chains in snow?
I skied at Perisher the other day.
On the road is a typical sign "Cars beyond this point must carry chains".

In NSW you aren't legally required to have chains on a 4WD, however if you hit black ice nothing will stop you from hitting a car or heading off road.
I was in Perisher last week and my BIL was driving his 4WD and couldn't stop, nor turn on the ice near the Guthega turnoff, the consequence was a broken car as he ran up the back of another.
Chains can be a good thing in many situations.

Carry is basically advice that the chains on sign might go up, if that happens when you want to come back down and you did not carry you would somehow need to find a set which will be an absolute nightmare from up top. Cheapest method is hire locally, or buying a set would cover hire of a few trips. Also carry a shovel to lend out to the luxury SUVs, enjoy a coffee while you watch them dig out of their parking space.

Over here in Europe we have plenty of spots which says chains are required but the roads are cleaned and the authorities spray salt to make sure ice is not a problem.
Winter driving is always tricky on roads that have not been cleaned up. You might end up like me, sliding backwards 30 meters, with a ridge on the left and a ditch on the right. That's what I get for being cocky after several Jeeps struggled for 3-4 hours to climb a 200m stretch of slope. I put the chains on after that.

Best just be on the safe side & get a cheap set. I have a set I got from Aldi years ago. IIRC they were only about $30. Never used them. Probably if they were used they would only be good for a short distance as they are very light.
If you had an accident where the sign had said fit them you would have insurance problems if you didnt have them on.
Probably if the police were involved they would give you a ticket any way & let you fight it if you could be bothered.

Because you are a skier then yes you need chains.
For us snowboarders... no chains, live on the edge
