Spare tire rotation??

Had to use my spare on the weekend as I had a flat. I've got about 17,000km in them. Is it ok to leave the spare on the rear tires or should I put it back as the spare?? When I asked dealer mechanic last service he said they don't rotate the spare as the difference in size from wear could damage the dif? Is this true??

best to use it on the front. It's true about the diff. It'll always have one wheel turning faster than the other if the diameters are different, therefore causing diff wear.

I have always rotated my spare in, right rear as a starting point. Never lost a diff because of this. But I rotate tyres at about 5,000 kms mark.

I rotate my spare in at every service - 6 months and around 5000 km normally. Also get an alignment at the same time. Never killed a diff and I'm getting 80,000+ out of a set of muddies

I always rotate my spare on as well, you get longer out of your tyres and if you don't want the same size tyres when it's time for new ones you don't have to get rid of a perfectly good spare.

Another for regularly rotating the spare in.

I tend to look at how worn the tyres are when rotating them & put the most worn on the spare. JK tyres don't wear evenly anyway, so if you aren't rotating them regularly one will wear down significantly more than the others. The JK is particularly hard on the front left if you live in an area with lots of small roundabouts...

It all comes down to .. can you afford to replace 5 tyres in one go? In my little Getz I just rotate the front ones as the backs never wear so when they wear out I'm only up for 2 tyres, much easier on the wallet. With the Jeep, the spare is odd so it stays in the car.
