Right on the money it seems...sort of. Found a thread here where a guy had very similar symptoms, turned out to be the front o2 sensor, he unplugged it and problems went away. I just went out and unplugged the front o2 sensor, back to idling nicely, took it for a spin around the block ran really well, though it wasn't fully warmed up so I let it warm up, plugged the o2 sensor back in...idle turns to crap, spin around the block missing and surging...back home, o2 sensor unplugged for another run around the block, perfect idle, drives nice and smooth...

Looks like a new o2 sensor is in order. Must get that exhaust manifold fixed too, it is cracked...

You are supposed to do comp test while hot.
I dont know how the cold start works on them, but it sounds like simple over fueling. Try disconnecting the O2 sensor & see what it runs like.

if the manifold cracked when it went in the drink, could be there is nothing wrong with the oxy sensor, it may work fine. Could be just the cracks letting the atmosphere in screwing up the exhaust gas readings.

Thats good to hear, cheap as with reversing camera at $189.
We had a $300 roof mounted rear dvd player for the kids in the old XJ and no problems in all the 4 years it was installed so thought I'd try the cheap option again..
