Are you suggesting someone could use the stock cooler and bypass the rad IMO that would not be wise. IMO you need a big Davies Craig V8 cooler or something similar before bypassing the rad. You might be surprised how much heat the rad does remove out of the tranny fluid before it goes through the stock cooler. I am bypassing mine when the trans goes back in but not because of trans temps. I have never had issues with burnt oil or even excessively dark oil. I dump the fluid every 20k and for years that is all I did and it has been fine. I actually have taken mine out of the rad because I am looking at recoing my trans. With the cost in excess of 2.5k I am not taking a chance with my alloy rad internal pipe work and potentially risking a recoed trans, not to mention the 6-8 weeks it would take me to refit it after I ruin it with coolant.

Regards A

I'm actually seeing lower temperatures since bypassing the radiator. Trans temp gauge takes slightly longer to rise in the morning but idling in traffic the temp sits at least 10 degrees c lower

I use a cooler as big as I can fit in front of the radiator.

Glad this thread resurfaced as I have since bypassed mine. I have a pretty decent cooler yet and concerned its not big enough. I felt the trans pan the other day and I was not able to hold my hand on it very long as it was too hot. I don't really have a good place to mount a temp gauge. Should I be able to hold onto the pan on a warm day after a decent drive?

Regards A

Mount it on the flat panel in front of the 4wd lever. Easy to get to, little bit hard to read in 2wd tho. When I get a minute I'm going to turn mine so the zero is at the top and 80* is at the 4 o'clock posi.

Mounted on a bit of angle that just pushes in between the plastic panels

Default improvements

Ordered all the bits today to completely redo the transmission cooling system, cost for all pictured was around $300 but i don't have to pay for labour , should make an interesting project to add to my ever piling up jobs to do on the jeep before going away camping over chrissy break.
