Default 2003 CRD and that noisy water recirculating pump

After the ignition is turned off there is a noise under the bonet for a vairable length of time, I asked the dealer and he pointed to a little bleck pump behind the air box and said this little device keeps water circulating in the engine after you switch off. Iasked how long it should run, he coul not answer.

Any Ideas of the purpose and what determines when it should switch off?

Gidday tricky - welcome aboard.

I don't know the answer. I was told same by my dealer.
The noise sounds like a swarm of bees under the bonnet - funnily last night it performed rather extra noisily on switch-off, yet only for about 5~10seconds.

Yup - Same here. 5-10 seconds.

I kinda like it.... all very technical

I suspect its not swilling engine (block) coolant, but rather the turbo water jacket coolant. Just a theory.

Maybe we should call Mercedes Benz and say that we have a 270 CDI and ask thge same question - they're bound to know more about their own engine

needed to look under the bonnet again due to water from the aircontitioner on the floor, seems that the mystrey pump hasmany answers depends on whom you ask, o investigation I notice that there is a tube to a vacum diaphram on the Turbo, so I suspect it is not a water device.

Who can get the real answer?

Not unusual for a modern Turbo, My GFs old mans Volvo (new T5 I think) can be sitting there all quite on a hot day when the fans/pumps etc kick in!!! very strange. I've seen it go on and off for hours in the garage after a long run.

Cheers

Tricky Dicky (the old man) had the next model up volvo before the jeep. The fan thingy comes on in the volvo to stop mould and algae build up or something but he can fill in the details when he logs on
