Agree that the Hill Descent is a great feature & it works extremely well on those short, sharp " oh no, I am going to die" type of downhill sections.
The issue with jumping up through the gears is on those long ( 2 - 8klm long) Vic high country downhills... not steep enough for HDC, but steep enough to warrant a safe, controlled descent using engine braking.
Don't know of any other manufacturer that programs their auto 4wd's to do same as Jeep GC

I've had the same issue on hill climbs. Most recently on a muddy hill climb it seems that it decided to change up the gears (even though I was in "manual" 2 low). It appears that rather than just capping the revs in manual, it will change up a gear.
When it changes up the combination of the back off of revs and the torque converter means you basically come to a stand still and lose all momentum.

Quite frustrating.

Some people have said to take it out of low range, but wouldn't that unlock the transfer case also? losing proper 4wd?

It's my understanding (I could be wrong) that the transfer case will lock up in high range whenever the electronics see fit. Exactly when it locks up versus when it doesn't I'm not too sure, but I'm 90% certain I've witnessed it lock on the gauge cluster screen that has the steering angle and diff info a few times.

are you guys going faster than 40KMH in low range ? low range has max speed of 40KMH and will "cut out" if you try and go over that .

I never run low unless aboslutely have to . Always leave it in high and use mode selector unless i need to go into mud setting
