Default Why are people paying so much for servicing?

Looking at buying a new grand, been sussing out running cost and have read on here people paying excessive amounts to service their CRD WK2's.

Wesfil make oil, air and fuel filters for them and are cheap as,
WCO163 $25.75 retail
WA5135 $29.15 retail
WCF203 $37.75 retail, 2 required.
A 20L Drum of BC3D oil retails for $209.75 which will do 2 oil changes.

How the hell are the jeep dealers getting away with it, i understand genuine would be deared, but there comes a point where theyre plain just ripping people off.

Safe to say i'd be supplying my own parts.

Its not just jeep dealers or even just mechanic's. Tradies in general have decided their time is worth gold pricing and charge accordingly. Why a tap washer is worth $80 call out and then $75hr or part thereof to get a plumber in...im not sure. The whole "call out" thing is a complete rip. Dont forget those jeep mechanic's are paid under $20hr yet are charged out at $90+ and that's IF you get a qualified one working on your cars. The apprentices get under $10hr at times yet you will still be charged at full tradies rates. Sorry but a blue collar tradies isnt worth $100k+ a yr like they pay in the mines nor does ANY mechanic shop justify $90hr+ for shop time. I also do 99% of my own work on my cars and if i need other stuff done im happy to pay a fair rate. Smaller shops are still qualified to do most of the work and they are busy because they care and offer decent service at a fair price. It can be hard to find with the big guys squeezing them out. Failing that a post on here for someone thats done the job before (or other forums) often gets a qualified mechanic offering to do it for cash.

Same from all dealers, I do my own auto for about $110, Tranny Specialist charges $350 hate to think what the dealer would charge.

Oil is one thing but how are they going to treat you warranty wise without genuine parts. They might accept your oil but not sure about aftermarket filters etc.

I do everything I can myself too and use aftermarket parts but have no warranty to worry about.

Totally agree that dealers are rip offs, and I never get mine serviced at one as you can do it much much cheaper yourself. Saying that, their prices of sometimes $120 ph and ridiculous part price mark-ups are needed to cover their huge overheads.

Some dealers have even been known to sell cars at a loss knowing they will make their money back from the parts and services over the ensuing years.

Locally we have a pub that has gone through its second licensee in 4 years. Rent is $550,000 per year, and they need to sell $125,000 of alcohol every week just to cover their overheads. So a dealer needs to charge crazy prices to cover rent, insurance, admin staff, etc etc and also his wife's diamond fetishes

Most filter companies, ryco, wesfil etc either meet or exceed manufacturers spec, afterall chrysler/jeep/mopar dont make s**t, they dont build cars, they assemble them from parts made from various companies, hell a genuine filter is probably a ryco. We are talking about an american car, assembled in austria, with and italian engine and a german transmission.

As far as im concerned (and consumer affairs) if the vehicle is maintained as per the manufacturers service schedule using the minimum requirement by the manufacturer and using parts the supplier states for the intended purpose there is no question to warranty, no warranty i have ever seen demands genuine parts be used, in fact i know some local dealers are using aftermarket parts to service vehicles in warranty.
Different story if you purchase an extended warranty from a dealer as they ussually speculate you must use their dealership for maintenance.

It just really peives me seeing how many people get ripped off and accept it.

When you think about it those $90 -$120.00 charge out rates is plus GST plus you have paid 30% personal tax which means its actually costing you.
$130.00 -$171.00 / hour. Plus typically parts are double / trible aftermarket / USA direct.
That's great motivation to do as much as possible yourself.
