Default XJ Diesel turbo stopped working

My wife tells me the xj diesel has lost power and sure enough the turbo has lost its boost. Where do you think i sould start looking to diagnose?

There is tons of information on this problem within these threads... Depends on the problem. Most likely, you are in limp mode. Where in the power band is it losing power? My guess is that it is losing power @ 2,000 RPM. That would completely indicate limp mode. The most likely cause is the #1 injector, but you would need to do lots of troubleshooting to find out. Much more information is needed before the smart guys can help you out.

A bit more information. It's a 1999 model. I opened the bonnet to find a rats nest under there. There is a cocus palm tree dropping seads nearby and the rats have used the engine to store them. They have partly chewed through the no 1 injector sensor wire so I checked the resistance at 106ohms which I think is OK. I've also checked the map sensor plug which seemed to be a bit loose so I've bent the pins and it's now tight. Took it for a quick drive and it seems to be getting some boost but still not full boost. I'll take it for a proper drive tomorrow.

If it is in limp mode will it come out if the fault is fixed or does it need to be reset?

That's the best idea. Definitely drive it so you know what's going on. I'm having a similar issue. Mine cuts power to 50% @ 2,000 RPM. I suspect it's actually the connector to the #1 injector. If you have bare wires, I'd fix that issue first then troubleshoot more. All it would take is those wires grounding on the fuel injector tubes to cause this issue. It could be a simple (read cheap) fix or a difficult one (read expensive). Know that the #1 injectors are quite expensive. There is a parts sticky at the top that has a link to a guy in Lithuania that sells them cheap. I've gotten a quote to ship to me in Italy for 100 GBP. Considering they are €500 new here, I think that's a good price.

It comes out of limp mode by itself.
An easy way to test is to unplug the sensor at the connector near the fire wall. If there is no change to the performance of the jeep with it disconnected then you are in a limp mode caused by #1 sensor.
There are several different limp modes depending on what the problem is.
What makes you think you have a turbo problem? Do you have a boost gauge?
You may have an air cleaner full of rat nest.

Thanks guys, I've tried unplugging the no. 1 sensor plug and it does get even more sluggish. The reason I suspected the turbo is because I am used to the boost I get and that's not happening. The air cleaner is clean with no sign of a rats nest. I've been doing all this on the run without much time so all a bit inconclusive. I'll have a good play over the weekend and report back. Thanks again for your help. Oh for a DRB 111.

Hey Mudmonster, do you know of anyone with a DRB111 around Coffs? Besides Belbowrie motors.
