Default Intermittent N to D harsh shift

I recently noticed my 2006 Cherokee KJ Diesel (175K Km) started shifting harsh (like a thump) when going from N to D (Auto Trans). Doesn't always occur, and seems to be mainly first thing in morning or when sitting for a few hours. Once the Auto is warm it seems to be fine.

Fluids always changed at 50K Km intervals and due again around 200K Km.
Fluid used is Penrite ATF+4 full synthetic.
Filter kit is WIX-58843.

Shift quality otherwise is perfect.

Anyone else having similar issues and should I be worried ?

Yeah, This is a fairly common thing, after a time it is that the trans fluid is draining from the torqueconverter, just let the vehicle idle a little bit after starting to purge the system, and you should find it smooth .

In my WJ, those symptoms were a precursor to a valve body failure.

Same gearbox so I’d treat it with a degree of suspicion. With nearly 200K km on the box it isn’t shagged but mine went around 135K, I work it hard though.

Anyway to diagnose or check the valve body?
A few years ago I installed a Transgo kit.

Apart from this minor issue it shifts great, so hoping no major issue.

Reading a numerous posts on lostjeeps, and turns out that the trans dip stick is not accurate, as they are too long (hence why they keep popping out). Most members advised to add .5L once top level reached. I'll try this and see if it improves the intermittent kick from Neutral to Drive. Failing that I'll change the oil and filters 10K early. I will also replace the anti drain back valve as per the guide below.

Since I slightly overfilled my Trans fluid, I have not had any further harsh shifts from N to D. Will keep monitoring.
