yukon axles in a d35
doing a ratio change to 3.73 from 3.55 have scored a set, d30 hp and d35 lsd out of a 97 diesel and wondering if Yukon axles are worth putting in before the new d35 goes in .i am only running 30" tires ,2" lift in a 4lt auto 96 sports.
will i gain much axle strength ,i know i would be putting more strain on the uni's but would prefer to replace uni's than axles. only interested as i have a L/H one sitting here just need a R/H for the set

IMO Yukon is fairly average in quality. I have used their seal kits and it leaked within a 6 months after a professional install. Alloy USA are far better quality. Just my 2c...

So I presume you have 1st hand experience with axles & gears from both of these company's, a lot of the Yukon gear including gears & seals are rebadged genuine Dana spicer parts, the best quality gears you can buy, that's why Yukon sell them at a premium price, their cheap gears like alloy USA come from India & china, which are a lot harder to set up & get uniform gear contact & are normally noisier,
as far as axle seals leaking after being replaced 6 months earlier, that can happen with any seal unless the job was done properly, by properly I mean replacing all worn parts including wheel bearings & axle if required, including correct installation of the parts, did you just get the seal changed without replacing any other parts, was the seal greased properly before being installed? Did the professional have clean hands when fitting the seal? Main reason for premature failure of most parts is incorrect installation

According to my diff builder Yukon gear is not that great. There are better brands out there. But guess you have been building diffs for 30 years as well like the bloke who builds mine. BTW My diff was fully rebuilt with all new parts and all seals greased. but that's beside the point.

In regards to the D35 axles even a better brand will still be weak as the whole D35 is a fairly average unit which you no doubt know. On 30s IMO you should be ok a few blokes run 30s on D35s and AFAIK they haven't had too much probs. I think spending money on new stronger axles won't give you a lot of extra strength. Might be better to just use the best two shafts; the ones with the best hardening on the bearing surface. And then carry the other as a spare in the back when you go offroad.

IMO for 30's I would not be spending money on upgraded D35 shafts unless you like to beat the crap out of your car. Tons of people run 31's on stock D35's. As for the front D30 definately don't need them. I run 35's on stock d30 axles.
