Default Potential new jeep owner

Hi guys

My names Adam, ive just signed up and hope to become a future Jeep owner.

Ive just had a Pajero been recalled due to this airbag issue thats going around. It was a car that I loved spending time maintaining and looking after but sadly fate has called.

Ive been looking at a different motor for my next one and some reason i am drawn towards Jeep and the Grand cherokee.

I just have a few questions if you dont mind to get a rought idea of what i should avoid and if its the car for me.

Im going to probably spend around 9-12k for second hand so firstly was wondering with this budget would the mileage on the car be realistically safe for the next few years. What is the max mileage on the ODO i should be looking for?

Also I love quirky cars and understand these can have issues. Im quite mechanically able to do all the service and oil changes my self so would have no issues with regular changes etc to keep the car tip top. Now obviously id need to get one with a tip top service history as ive seen they can have some issues, especially in Australia? So the question is which, if any, years should i avoid and what year range is good for my price rang/ model.

And regarding fuel consumption my Pajero was a greedy git so im used to 14-19km per 100, what is the average range for say the different models of the Grand cherokee.

My driving habits would be driving the car to work 3 times a week and then on weekends, Does this car need certain routine to keep it tip top or leaving it for 1 day to stand cold wouldn't do any damage?

If theres anything a potential new Grand Cherokee owner should know before viewing one that would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers for any responses in advance guys, I hope i can join the Jeep owners community very soon pending replies!

Adam

If you like quirky, you can't get quirkier than the WG 2.7 CRD. If you chase down an Overland, you get the Variloc differentials which makes them almost unstoppable off road.

You will need to be able to do your own maintenance. Most mechanics won't touch them. There are a few specialists who will. Check your local area before buying. Also, if you can't do your own work it will send you broke. They are prone to small but frequent issues. Sometimes they are hard to diagnose - very hard. Don't buy one if you have a short fuse. You'll end up torching it.

I've owned one for about 2-1/2 years and done over 40000km in it. I love it. It's only got me stuck once, when I shredded a CV on the front driveshaft on Fraser Island. After being towed to the tarmac, I still drove home with the offending shaft in the boot.

They need injectors changed around 180k to 240k. It will set you back around $2.5k for parts and about the same again for labour. An engine rebuild will cost around $10k, so make sure you get one in good condition. They should last 500k if looked after.

Gearbox is good. It's the NAG1. Very solid and well matched to the engine.
