Default Wj 2,7 engine getting warm

Hi guys!
I think this is my first post on this forum, and I have to start by saying that this seems to be great forum!

Im from Norway, so its not always easy to find the right words to use when explaining

I hope you guys can point me in the right direction with my Jeep's problem. It has a tendensy to "overheat" when driving in steep hills in low speeds, and on realy hot days. A realy hot day in Norway is 27-30C, so a lot less then it would be in Australia When I say overheat I mean it gets close to 100C, so not realy overheating, but a lot warmer then my friends 2,7crd WJ.

When I bought the Jeep 4 years ago it wasn't like this. I have tried pretty much everything, but nothing helps.. What I've done is:

-replaced steering box, radiator, servopump, "new" solenoid, thermostat, 3xECT sensor and ac condensator.

I've found out that the hydraulic fan runs like it should when using it to cool the AC, but with that turned off the fan hardly spins when the engine is abow the 90C mark. When ideling, the fan stops when turning the wheel, but does not show any sign of loosing speed when doing the same when the AC is on... I talked to a mechanic at a Jeep dealership, and he said that if the fan spins up more when hot and when putting it in reverse it could be the ecu for the gearbox, but tested this and no change.

Sorry for the long post and possibly bad discription of the problem, but im at my wits end here:/

Thank you in advace for any answers

I'm not sure what others think but this is pretty similar to my WJ CRD. If it is working a little harder and at slow speeds the temperate will creep up to the 100C mark, which shouldn't really be a concern IMO.

Modern cooling systems do run up hotter than the old days and pressurised systems and modern coolants means 100+ degrees is not actually the boiling point of cars cooling system. Doesn't really sound that bad but sounds like the only thing you haven't replaced is actually fan hub assembly.

don't really understand the dealer comment regarding the fan being dodgy if it speeds up more when hot. Isn't that it's function. Also don't understand how the gearbox ECU has any relevance at all.

The solenoid you refer to I presume is the fan actuating solenoid. All your heat exchangers in the front are clear of mud and debris ??? and all your seals etc are in tact sealing the gaps around the radiator and other heat exchangers so you are not loosing airflow.???

It makes sense that the A/C ECU will trigger the fan when on and that makes me think the fan itself sounds OK which if there is a drama points to the electronic actuating system of the fan. (Sorry but don't recall at present the setup exactly)

Mine does that too and I just put it down to the transmission cooler being inside the radiator. Transmission heats up (especially towing uphills) and coolant heats up that bit more.

Sorry for not being much help, but it seems you've eliminated most of the basic issues. Keep an eye on it though.

Slow long climbs in cool weather like 28deg, mine used to climb up to 95 - 100, after i fitted an extra tranny cooler it gets up there when its around the 35deg mark, the local big hill has been at 40kph due to rebuilding for the last year so get to check things regularly. Sounds pretty normal to me, as it gets to 100 you should hear the fan kick in at full noise also but not for very long, mostly caused by the tranny I reckon. PS fluid looking clean, it does a lot of work that fluid.

Thanks for your replies! The mechanic said that "if the fan speeds up more WHEN putting the jeep in reverse" the ecu would be faulty, but he also implied that this "problem" could be me chasing ghosts.

I can also experience this problem when its -10C in the winter going uphill. I have never been above 100C, but I don't like it since a friend of mine has a stocker with a stable 90C in all hills..

Again, thanks for your replies! Should I maybe switch out the thermostat from 89C to 85C? I guess you guys maybe run 85C?

I wouldn't worry to be honest, normal temperature is 90c so a 10 degree increase isn't a major problem IMO.

Do you have any accessories on the front of the car that could reduce airflow?
