Default Jeep CJ66: Mopar’s 2016 SEMA Jeep Concept Unveiled!

sema 2016 Jeep Sema Coverage Vegas CJ66What do you get when you cross a Jeep TJ Wrangler, a ’66 Jeep CJ Tuxedo Park, and a Jeep JK Wrangler?

What can we really say about this peice of engineering? It's simply stunning and a work of art in the CJ66 from Mopar. Throw into this tri-generational engineering concoction an until-today unconfirmed new powerplant, and you have the Jeep CJ66. That is Mopar’s latest concept Jeep on display for the very first time at the 2016 SEMA Show, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The new engine was upgraded with a Mopar cold-air intake and cat-back exhaust system, helping to feed more power into the six-speed manual transmission. The gear-stuffed logs you see underneath the Copper Canyon-colored body are Mopar Dana 44 Crate axles.

A two-inch suspension lift helps fit 35-inch BFGoodrich all-terrain tires wrapped around Jeep Performance Parts (JPP) 17-inch beadlock wheels underneath the oversized “concept” fenders of the CJ66.

The body got even more goodies. Mopar 10th Anniversary Wrangler JK front and rear bumpers, JPP skidplates, and specially trimmed JPP rock rails are fitted to the CJ66.

The concept hood and latches are highlighted with matte black, as are the seven-slot grille and headlight bezels. Mopar LED amber fog lights, a Mopar Warn winch with a fairlead adapter, and a racecar-inspired fuel filler cap complete the exterior adornment.

Passengers are treated to custom Viper seating with concept seat risers, shaded by a bikini-style netting top, and surrounded by a custom mandrel-bent tube roll cage formed to match the windshield that has been cropped by two inches.

The interior is made up of a Wrangler JK center console and shifter, with a custom 50th Anniversary Moab Easter Jeep Safari steering wheel, and Mopar instrument panel gauges. Mopar all-weather floor mats help keep the tub clean and dry.

The Jeep CJ66 Concept will never be a production vehicle. The Mopar team started with a 1966 Jeep CJ body, altered it to fit on a Jeep TJ chassis (1997-2006 Wrangler), and equipped it with a Jeep JK (2007-2017 Wrangler) lights, bumpers, and hood, all painted in Copper Canyon.

The smaller Jeep on the bigger chassis led to interesting proportions in the back, almost giving it a little truck bed area behind the Viper seats. Mopar has filled that little cargo area with a huge 35 inch beadlock wheel/17 inch tire combo (BFG tires, JPP wheels) which matches the set on the ground and capped the whole vehicle with a roll cage, mandril-bent to match the windshield surround.

Since the CJ body seemed too tall after the vehicle was assembled, the crew trimmed the windshield line by 2 inches and on the sides, the Jeep CJ66 Concept has rock rails, wheel flares, and control switches for a well-integrated central tire inflation system. Oversized, concept fender flares defend against obstacles, along with Mopar 10th Anniversary Wrangler JK Rubicon Bumper Kits, JPP skid and front bumper plates, and custom-fit JPP rock rails.

Fog lamps are Mopar LEDs; the Warn winch has a fair lead adapter to guide the cable. The fuel cap was moved to sit inside the fender wheel-well.
