I think I read somewhere that 2nd gear is a mechanical interlock?? Might be wrong, but I'm sure I read it in relation to limp modes and forcing your car to be driveable with a transmission control fault.
I tried same using each gear individually. No change. It is really odd. It drives well. Then I turn it off. And once I turn it on, it just does not want to move forward. I also thought of the solenoid if this might be faulty.
Funny thing is, that it happened when I popped the radiator. It did not show up earlier.

Never used it, but Diag Pro has a transmission solenoid test. Might be worth a read up about it.

So just for my benefit here. You tried each individual gear and never got forward drive? I guess that confirms there is no mechanical interlock to force it into gear.

Good to know.

Yeah, there's a known fault with crappy contacts on the board. There are more robust boards available, but I have read others have had success from a good solid clean-out.

This causes a P0702 fault.

9. Fault code P0700 is caused by solenoids
P0700 is also transmission electrical fault, but it is related with transmission solenoids and if you have this code instead of P0702, then you should look at solenoids, TCM or wiring between them.

Taken from the webpage in the post above.

That is correct. When I have this issue and get the P0700 code and I clear it, I get the gears back. It looks like there is a electronic switch which does not allow the gear to engage.
