Default whine on start up

have done a search and first thought is idler pulley
however as there is no shortage of pulleys in there,is there any shortcut to diagnose which one
highpitched whine on startup that quietens down after a short time, but still audible
94 xj 200.000 ks
cheers brian

So its not the wife in the passenger seat then?

Get a short length of hose and put one end to your ear and hold the other end near the centre of each pully, taking care not to get it caught in the belt. That should identfy which one is the culprit.

The Plastic one is usually the first to go. if not it might be the metal one next to it.
