Default Transfer case Q?

I think I asked this a fer months ago, but I didn't get any replies. the Transfer case in the XJ/KJ, are they the same, and can you put one in a TJ (will they fit without too much drama)

I'm thinking that it would be better for on dirt roads, and on bitumen in the wet if a TJ had Full Time, as well as part time.

Reasons:
1. not sure how "command trac" differs from any other generic Part time case which has both Ds's rotate at the same speed when in 4H/4L
2 there's got to be an advantage in having both driveshafts able to rotate at different speeds around corners under power in slippery situations (dirt, shallow sand, wet roads, wet grass etc)
3. any sharp turns such as avoiding Roos could bugger up the case/either driveshaft/diffs if it was in Part time.

thanks in advance for all the help you can give me.

Default Transfer case Q?

XJ comes with 242 tx case. (petrol only)
TJ comes with 231 tx case.

think they are sort of inter-changable most likely with minor adjustments. ask dxj, think he had a look into this...

231 has 2WD, 4WD-H and 4WD-L.
242 has 2WD, 4WD-constant, 4WD-H, and 4WD-L
where 4WD constant allows you to drive in 4WD in hard surfaces, similar to constant 4WD you get in a 247 and a 249 tx case. where 4WD-H & -L cannot, as the the tx is locked.

i have ditched the factory 247 from my jeep and installed a 242 from a XJ a couple of year back. and people in the US have been swapping the 231 in ZJs, so that they can have teralow... so i dont think there is lots of problem to fit a 242 in a TJ.

Default Transfer case Q?

I read in JP magazine that it could be done but you had to send one half of the transfer case to be modified. If you have geared right in the first place and do more than play in the rocks the stock 242 with the 2.73 low is enough!
