Default XJ Turbo Diesel or XJ Petrol

Hi all, I have been thinking about what I am going to do about a 4X4. I have a HJ60 Cruiser if some of you didn't know, and now thinking about trading up^^ to either 80 series (maybe if $$$ is right) or a XJ :D . But what I would like to find out from you all is which would you pick if you where in my position. I would probably end up with just over 20k to spend on the truck so I guess I will be looking at around the 97yr model for a jeep???? or around 91 for the Cruiser:( I love the tourque in the Turbo diesel's but have heard some bad things about the Jeep Turbo diesel's. is this a big enough issue for me to say to hell with it and use more fuel (around town) with a petrol?? any info and ideas would be grateful thanks guys!!! ;)

Default XJ Turbo Diesel or XJ Petrol

Some diesel's do have problems and continue to but others are fine from the start and stay that way. Maybe it is the day they are made on?
I was thinking of a diesel instead of my petrol XJ but if anything needs doing to any diesel the repair costs are very bad due to their construction for such a high compression. I would rather have more running costs day to day that you get very quickly used to than terrible cost when something goes wrong myself.
You must also remember that the petrol are only autos and the diesels only manual. Also the petrol can run in 4wd on the street but the diesel cannot. The petrol has plenty of torque down low so long as you dont go sticking large exhaust pipes on. You got to remember that the petrol has more torque than your HJ60 and weighs over 500 kgs less!
If you need all the room that your HJ60 has inside than a XJ maybe too small anyway. I tow a trailer around Australia to over come this as I prefer the cheaper running and much easier parking the other 11 months of the year. I get around 16.5l/100kms around town on short trips and the same adverage on trips fully loaded. On the highway get as low as 12l/100kms. This would be around the same as you now.
To see my set up and where I have been check out my site!

Default XJ Turbo Diesel or XJ Petrol

Hi,

If you are undecided on diesel vs petrol XJ then you want a petrol.

Diesel engines are an acquired taste. XJ diesel is not very common. Parts very expensive.

I love my deisel and wouldn't swap, but probably not the best choice for most people.

XJ petrol is a great off road vehicle built up very cheaply. Probably one the world's widest selection of aftermarket gear too for pre 97 models.

As for 80 series vs XJ? Two completely different vehicles.
Either you have a size problem or you don't.

Cheers
