Good luck! I was not aware that they could be reprogrammed. I always thought they were burned once only. I will be interested to hear if you are able to get it done.

Spoke to Jeep Dealer. Said sometimes reprogram works, sometimes not. From memory they said $85.00 to try, $160.00 if it works.
A localish locksmith said he can program a new fob ( non Jeep) for about a $100.00. Also have another licksith looking into it, said he beleives he can do it. I don't want to take any "maybes" mucking about with it in case the existing one and only key stops working . Will let you know as I progress.

The remote is a passive device: it is not programmed but the code is read into the ECU and if it is the same as the programmed code it is accepted. You can program an old remote into the system.
NOTE: the US and AU versions use different frequencies and this can be changed if you have the knowledge to change the oscillator (SAW resonator) to adjust the frequency.
The system works the same as credit card, toll, etc - it powers up in the presence of the correct magnetic field and sends its ID to the SKIM.

Thanks for the info. And excuse my lack of knowledge/understanding. So do you think a decent locksmith should be able to get my wrecker fob to work?
I know he did say don't waste time and money getting one from the USA.
