Default Serpentine Belt removal

Water pump couldn't handle the temps over the week-end and decided to dump all the water not too far from home, fortunately. Decided to change the water pump myself. Got stuck very early in the process. ..how do you loosen off the tension on the belt?? (I already posted this with the Cherokee section not realising you have a tech talk section...my apologies) By the way it's a 95 XJ 4.0L. Thanks

From memory the XJ belt is tensioned by a spring loaded pulley.
It's on the drivers side. Basically you put your dirty big spanner on the pulley bolt, but instead of loosening it you tighten it - this should move the pulley and mount and allow you to remove the belt.....
Well that's my vague memory...I let someone that ACTUALLY ones an XJ answer

Not sure what's on your mind but judging from your description I think it might be the habits of another type of serpentine..! ;)
