How much space do you need?

My rear frame cover doesn't have a cutout for the tyre so I use the Rampage spare mount that lifts the wheel around 5cm (maybe more). It's cheap and sturdy because it's a basic steel box but I had to trim it a little to fit with my Teraflex door hinge.

There are also spacers for the spare tyre that lift it up and outward. Rough Country's looks good but I couldn't find anyone in Australia that stocked it.

I made a plate with holes to match the spare wheel carrier & then welded studs into the plate 90mm higher up to bolt the original wheel carrier to. The tyre was then level with the bottom of the door & I was also able to use the original rubber steadies that stopped the wheel from wobbling.

Thank you all for you replies.

I don't want to touch the towing rig itself so won't look at changing the hitch or ball mount etc.

I've had a look at the Rough Country Spare Tire Mount and prefer it over the Teraflex. First it's $200.00 cheaper and secondly I don't need anything too heavy duty as I don't intend to upgrade the wheel/tire package beyond standard size.

Again thank you to all.

Keep in mind that any spacer will actually move your spare tyre away from the tailgate, which means that it will solely be supported by the mount and any wobbling will not be dampened by the rubber stoppers.

As you've got a stock spare tyre you 'should' be ok in the long term but something to consider anyway as the stock tailgate mount is not the strongest and prone to cracking with heavy spare tyres mounted to rims with big offsets (therefore moving the tyre away frost the tailgate).

A set of Daystar bump stops would bring the tyre back into contact with the tailgate.

The terraflex mount can be ajusted in or out so it sits on the original rubber stoppers.
