Default 2011 overland - wheel choice

Has anyone used 20inch rims for off road use and had no or little issues of any sort? Or perhaps plenty of problems and would never do it again?

I'm looking at purchasing an 2011 hemi overland shortly and wondering if I bother with the off road pack just to get the underbody protection (although it would be very useful) as I hate the look of the polished 18inch rims that come with the package. I've had a look online and found the coopers Zeon ltz Tyres as a potential choice which would allow reasonable summer time high country off road trips with the 20inch rims. My experience with rubber has only been with serious 33 or 35inch Tyres on 16's so I haven't a clue if I'm way off the mark here assuming the coopers would allow you to drop the pressure slightly and enjoy dry weather 4wding. I know deep ruts or serious mud is not going to be the domain of large rims due to the damage they could easily sustain. I really only get out 3or 4 trips a year which can be from robe in the sand to the Victorian high country.

The next question is how much bigger in terms of width and Hight will the new overland allow for as the two sizes to choose from in these coopers are around 2cms wider and slightly taller that then standard 20inch size supplied. These look great and in searching online plenty of rangerovers have been using them the past couple of years and love them.

I don't think anybody in Aus has much experience with these yet, coz unless you were able to pick up a limited from the first batch of Grands brought in, then everybody else is still waiting to get theirs. My overland isn't due until July

But if it was me I wouldn't get the offroad pack, as without a doubt there will be aftermarket underbody protection offered soon. And realisticaly the kind of wheeling you would be doing in an overland won't be that hard anyway

Well I do infact run 20" rims on one of my 4x4s... but it aint one of your usual 4x4s or are they exactly what you were refering to. (see attached photo) But these kick ass on this beast!

But IMHO most of these large rim sizes with the low profile tyers look terrable and perform hopless off road.

They should be reserved for road cars, H3 Hummers and EU 4x4s.

20" rims are no good for offroad at all, except maybe in PhilCJ10's case.

It's all about profile. The higher the profile the less chance of punctures and the greater the footprint (lengthwise) when you deflate them.

If you deflate a low profile, you'd be running the rim on the rocks.

Pmac - I think you're right... I've had a good look on some of the US jeep forums and found that all the guys doing any semi serious offroad are all running 18's with decent rubber so I think I'll ditch the 20's idea. Some pictures of them with BFG all terrains actually look great too.

Now to find the best price on an overland!
