Default Oil Filter Adaptor, What size Torx bit?

Hi,

Looking to redo the O-ring seals in the oil filter adaptor of my '96 Cherokee.

I figure the cost saving of doing it myself will outweigh the cost of buying a set of torx bits to undo the housing.

I dont want to pay the $100+ for a huge torx bit set as I won't use it often.

So, can anyone tell me what size torx bit is need for the housing? I'm guessing around T55 or T60 but some cheaper sets don't have the T60.

Cheers

Guzzi

Yep ... its the next size up - from the largest in the cheap sets.

The only T60 i could buy seperate was a impact socket but i had to cut the end off and grind it square as it hit the inner gaurd.
Youll need plenty of leverage as its pretty dam tight, its easiest to undo from underneath

Hi,

Thanks for all the straight up advice.

Large Torx are not a common home toolkit item, can't even borrow one from a mate!

Not an urgent repair, already have the o-rings so will have to keep looking for a cheap T60. Looked at an impact bit too and agree, not enough room.

Cheers,

Guzzi

Torx bits available from here .....

Only a few bucks each .... Make sure they give you the std bit and not the safety bit with the hole in it ... unless you want one of those as well.

Unfreakingbelievable!!!

I just collected all the bits together to begin this job today (before the heavens opened up), I hunted around town for a semi decent Torx kit (why buy just one when the XJ needs an assortment) and located a Kinchrome Torx (tamper resistant) bit set mounted in 1/4 & 3/8 drive sockets at Bunnings Hardware for about $26.00, now even though they're mounted in a socket with a bit of a "tap" you can knock it out and use it as a simple Torx bit...

One thing I noticed was using it as a simple bit I was required to mate it to a 10mm ring spanner, I'm not confident this configuration will work without snapping the spanner so instead I had planned to jack up the right side of the engine (after removing the engine mount bolt) to create sufficient clearance to use a 3/8 drive ratchet (and maybe a pipe extension)

FWIW T60 is right on the money!

Might not snap them but will sure as hell bend em .... even some of the better brands

2 x ring spanners on the bit with a cheater bar slipped over both spanners seems to work fine though.
