I tend to think there should be two ratings: one based on the structural integrity of the vehicle and its ability to protect the occupants, and one that includes electronic aids like Lane Departure Warning, seat belt warnings, ABS, airbags.
I think the rating system should evolve. A five star vehicle of 2007 cant be compared to a 2019 five star model, even if on paper they offer the same protection.

The 2019 vehicle should, for example, be a 7 star vehicle because of its additional features.

A 2019 jeep might for example get a 3 star rating if measured against 2007 parameters.

The system is very coarse and designed to scare people IMO.

Cheers.

The fact that a Wrangler is "purpose built" doesn't negate the fact we still need to drive on public roads to get to the offroad.

You have given a perfect example of my comment about election results.
By introducing other cars.
Would you prefer to be in a 5 star yaris or a wrangler?
Lane departure is there for idiots that are busy on their phone & not driving safely.

Best remember that air bags were invented in response to not being able to mandate set belt use in the USA.
You could have used a Mack truck & then all the examples go out the window.

It's interesting that they used the results of the US testing and Euro NCAP instead of doing their own testing (afaik). I wonder if they reinterpreted the data according to Australian standards or if it is a copy/paste job?

Nobody’s gonna be surprised that a body on frame doesn’t crash test as well as a German sedan... but seriously, Jeep will charge you nearly 80-f’ing thousand dollars for a high-spec Wrangler.. The $25k Jimny got 3 stars out of a body on frame design. The Haval H9 costs less than the Wrangler, and is built on a ladder frame, but got 4 stars (in 2015 - but that still shits over a one star in 2019).

You’ve gotta wonder WTF Jeep were thinking to sign off on a weaker than average body structure and a lack of safety tech.

Cant help but wonder how a one star rating will affect resale values, particularly if the next revision gains a much higher rating.

Low or no stars have not affected resale values of Land Rover Defenders. They cost more used, than they did when they were new.
