had an annoying creaking noise coming from my DS front wheel

told my mechanic at rego I thought it was just the plastic Jeep cover flexing on my Ford wheel, he was dubious

Today, it was almost ratcheting, bad on cornering, so I am thinking uni or bearing

Put the spare on and she is silent as a lamb, pretty good result compared to the alternative

ok wrong!..try again

thinking expensive Rock Auto order for Timken hubs, Spicer Unis and ball joints

however, lets inspect first, as the PS brake caliper previously bound up enough to damm near smoke the pads

here is what I found, bottom was worse, sorry about the poop pics, after sunrise...(for some reason I cannot upload them)

but suffice to say, I MIG welded up the worn grooves on the steering knuckles and ground them smooth

This allows the caliper to slide freely, not wedge into the groove

this problem WILL afflict your XJ, as the full force of braking drives the pad support into the knuckle material, over the years, a groove gets worn.

Both sides welded up now.

took it for a test drive...no more noise, so hopefully got it this time

in my opinion, every owner should check for the issue...and fix it

it can cause a severe brake binding issue that could leave you stranded, and require new caliper, disc and pads, if everything got too cooked

luckily when it first happened to me I was local, but you could smell it

It took me less than 2hrs to drag my tools out and finish the job, I think a good tradie could do both sides in that time. If you have mig, just do it at home

Yep, my caliper sliders were worn and catching too.
I welded and ground them smooth, and brakes are good again.
Seems a very common problem

Cheers,

So my transmission decided it only wants to go forward, after 342k

no point sulking about it, crack out the tools and swap it for the spare I bought just for the occasion, I took it myself out of a '96 that
was being wrecked and had 260k on it

nasty job, a lot of stuff is in the way, no problems so far, but its not out yet, maybe tommorrow, if nothing goes wrong

estimating a minimum of 20 hrs to R & R, but I do have to work slow, take breaks and so forth
